Every week, we'll select Taiwan's five business news from the previous week for your review.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC is expected to post a fourth consecutive quarter of record profit amid strong demand for AI chips, Reuters reported Monday. Analysts estimate net profit for January–March at roughly NT$542.6 billion (US$17.1 billion). Any result above NT$505.7 billion would mark a record high and extend its profit growth streak to nine quarters.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Honhui Plaza in New Taipei’s Xinzhuang District aims to reach NT$6 billion (US$200 million) in revenue this year following last year’s renovation and initiatives to attract a wider range of customers, aiming to become one of the city’s top-earning department stores. Honhui Plaza, which opened in 2020, is the only department store in Xinzhuang District, per CNA. Company Executive Director Ko Su-yin (柯愫吟) said the addition of the Japanese supermarket Lopia in 2024 has boosted sales. Lopia has become the store’s highest-grossing shop, generating annual revenue of NT$350 million.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei's transport department said Thursday it has launched an automated canopy pilot program to provide shade for pedestrians waiting at traffic lights. CNA reported the smart canopies have been installed at two intersections near Banqiao Station, an area with heavy foot traffic. Officials said the system was introduced from South Korea. The canopies are equipped with smart sensors that detect sunlight and wind conditions, automatically opening in strong sunlight and closing at night or during high winds to ensure safety, per Liberty Times.

Taiwan's three major international airlines are all aggressively expanding their fleets and route networks, with a particular focus on new openings in North America. These routes will add around 20 direct flights per week between Taiwan and the United States, a market in which Taiwanese carriers have also worked out codeshare agreements with domestic U.S. airlines to cover hundreds more destinations. The question is, why? One answer is the need to find new sources of customers.

85°C Bakery Cafe, a Taiwanese bakery and café chain with over 1,000 locations worldwide, is set to open its first Colorado outpost in Aurora's Parker Commons shopping center. The fast-casual concept, founded in 2003 with a mission to make high-quality pastries and specialty coffee more accessible, is known for its wide selection of freshly baked breads, pastries, and handcrafted drinks.
