Taipei, June 8 (CNA) Sun Chia-ming (孫嘉明), president of Taiwan-based international carrier EVA Airways, has become the first Taiwanese member of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) board of directors, EVA Air said Monday. In a statement, EVA Air said Sun was elected one of the IATA's board members at the association's 82nd Annual General Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Tuesday that Taiwan is projected to become one of the world's 20 largest economies next year, citing strong growth forecasts and the country's increasingly important role in the global AI supply chain. Lai said this year’s Computex Taipei theme, “AI Together,” highlights that as AI development enters its next stage, it requires collaboration among like-minded and trustworthy partners worldwide, per CNA. He said recent investment expansions by major technology companies demonstrate strong international confidence in Taiwan’s industrial capabilities and democratic system.
〔Taiwan News〕Taiwan’s Foxconn breaks ground on plant in France
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foxconn broke ground Monday on an advanced packaging and testing facility in France valued at NT$9 billion (US$286.22 million). The project is led by Tessalia, a joint venture formed by Foxconn, defense and electronics firm Thales, and precision components maker Radiall, per CNA. The facility is located in Le Barp, about 40 minutes south of Bordeaux. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2029, with annual output projected to exceed 50 million system-in-package components by 2033, per The Storm.
〔Taiwan News〕Tour group from Japan visits Penghu
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A group of almost 200 Japanese travelers visited Penghu in a move to promote the island county to an international clientele, reports said Saturday. The group spent three days and two nights in Penghu to visit local cultural highlights and attend the fireworks festival, per CNA. Last year, 1.48 million Japanese traveled to Taiwan, with Penghu trying to attract a larger share by boosting its presence at travel fairs and contacts with tour operators.
