Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre will tour Japan twice this year, following a 16-year-gap, performing two works by choreographer Cheng Tsung-lung (鄭宗龍) after he succeeded group founder Lin Hwai-min (林懷民) in 2020, the group said in a statement. The world-famous dance troupe will perform Cheng's 2020 work "Sounding Light" (定光) at the Setouchi Triennale in August, a contemporary art festival held every three years on the islands in Japan's Seto Inland Sea, according to the group.
〔Taiwan News〕Taiwan's January retail sales exceed NT$440 billion
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Tuesday that Taiwan's retail sales in January reached NT$445.1 billion (US$ 14.6 billion). The figure set a record, rising 5.3% compared to the same period last year. Sales of general merchandise, which accounted for the largest share, reached NT$148 billion, a 15.1% year-on-year increase, per CNA.
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Chunghwa Telecom will attend the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week to discuss satellites with major international operators, the company said Wednesday. Chair Alex Chien (簡志誠) will lead the delegation to the March 3-6 annual fair, billed as the largest and most influential connectivity event in the world. He is expected to meet with representatives of satellite operators Eutelsat, Amazon’s Kuiper Systems, and SES.
〔Taiwan News〕Taiwan approves 8 science park investment projects
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Science and Technology Council approved eight investment projects in Taiwan's science parks on Wednesday. The council held a review meeting Wednesday, announcing a total investment of NT$3.34 billion (US$109.5 million). Of these, five projects involve capital increases, amounting to NT$980 million, per CNA.
Taiwan's tourism deficit grew in 2024 as the country struggles to get its tourist numbers back up to pre-pandemic levels. Some experts say Taipei could think about reopening to group tours from China, ramping up tourism from Japan and South Korea or relaxing visa restrictions for tourists from Southeast Asia.
