Every week, we'll select Taiwan's five business news from the previous week for your review.
Taiwan’s large-scale retail market continues to become increasingly concentrated among major retail groups. According to market data compiled by the Taiwan Council of Shopping Centers and Commercial Real Estate (TCSCRE), the five leading retail groups—Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, Far Eastern Department Stores, Far Eastern SOGO, Mitsui Fudosan, and Breeze Group—accounted for approximately 58.3% of the market in 2025, highlighting the growing influence of major retail operators in Taiwan’s physical retail sector.
Breeze Development Co. plans a major overhaul in Taipei’s Xinyi District following the loss of the Taipei Main Station mall, the company said at its 25th anniversary celebrations Tuesday. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store Co. started managing the station mall on July 25 after defeating Breeze in the bidding process. Breeze had been in charge of the complex for almost 20 years. The change is expected to reduce revenue during the anniversary sales period to NT$5.7 billion (US$180.78 million) from NT$6 billion last year, the company said. Its overall revenue target for 2026 is NT$35.5 billion, similar to last year, per UDN. Sales for the first eight months of 2026 rose between 7% and 10%.
Taiwan will offer spending incentives to returning international travelers from October as part of a broader effort to encourage more repeat visits from Singapore and Southeast Asia, CNA reported Tuesday. Tourism Administration International Affairs Division Chief Joseph Cheng said returning international travelers will have a chance to receive NT$5,000 (US$165) in spending credit from Oct. 10. Those traveling with a companion may receive up to NT$8,000, while tour groups will be eligible for separate incentives.
Taiwan's momo.com reported August consolidated revenue of NT$9.15 billion (approximately $289.3 million), up 7.8% year-over-year, marking its largest single-month annual increase so far this year. Cumulative revenue for the first eight months reached approximately NT$71.4 billion (approximately $2.3 billion), up 3.4% year-over-year, setting a new record high for the same period. Summer travel and Zhongyuan Ghost Festival shopping were the primary growth drivers, with Ghost Festival period sales rising nearly 40% month-over-month. Beverages, snacks, and instant noodles were the top three best-selling categories.
Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store Co. will start work on transforming the Taipei Main Station mall before the end of the year, with the iconic black-and-white checkered floor to be removed after April, reports said Saturday. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi won the bid to manage the mall in April, defeating Breeze Development Co., which had operated the site for almost 20 years. The change of management was completed on July 25. Shin Kong Mitsukoshi handed a three-phased plan to transform the mall to Taiwan Railway Corporation in August, per UDN. The company planned to invest NT$1 billion (US$31.6 million) in the project.
